NRBLN - BLNRB

is a project of young bands and musicians from Nairobi and Berlin who together try to fathom the borders between electronic music, hip-hop and African musical traditions.

The project is organized and trusteed by Goethe-Institute Nairobi and the Teichmann brothers, a Berlin DJ- and musician duo. Other participants are Modeselektor, for long an institution in matters pertaining to electronic music from Berlin, the likewise Berlin-based multinational trio Jahcoozi and MC Sasha Perera from London, Robot Koch from Berlin and Oren Gerlitz from Tel Aviv. Kenyan participants of the NRBLN project are to date the hip-hop/ dancehall collective Ukoo Flani, the MCs Abbas, Kimya and Lon’Jon, the electro house trio Just a Band and traditional Kenyan instrumentalists like the singer and percussionist Lydia Mwango.

Since February 2009, the musicians have been working together within the frameworks of NRBLN, from hitherto two journeys have emerged the first recordings. Some participants appeared within the context of the “German cultural weeks” in Nairobi in November 2009. The song “Msoto Millions” from Ukoo Flani and Jahcoozi will feature in the Berlin Label BPitch Control album “Barefoot Wanderer by Jahcoozi early in the year. The piece “Dirty Laundry”, a collaboration between the Teichmann brothers and the MCs Mr. Abbas, Kimya and Lon’Jon is to be heard on the movie “Soul Boy” from Hawa Essuman and Tom Tykwer, which likewise emerged in Nairobi as a co-production project by One Fine Day Films, Arri Munich, Ginger Ink and Goethe –Institute Nairobi. Its international premiere celebrates “Soul Boy” in this year’s Göteborg International Film Festival and in Germany it is to be seen for the first time in this year’s Berlinale.

Early in the year 2010, the Berlin musicians will travel again to Nairobi to continue working on joint songs and prepare joint concerts. This journey will be recorded on camera and documented by Arte/Tracks and the foreign editorial office of ZDF. The tracks will eventually be released in a joint CD in Europe and Africa. At the end of the project this year, the Kenyan musicians will be invited to concerts in Berlin. These have been planned at this time in the framework of the Worldtronics festivals in the House of World Cultures and in the legendary WMF Club.

In a year in which interest in Africa is rising, we want to replace the stereotype of a war-torn, hungry and poverty stricken Africa with a realistic picture: that of dynamic and highly creative urban cultures which in their own way adapt to international developments and propagate themselves – and give back to the international scene. Through the names from Berlin and a release on a famous label will attention on electronic music and hip-hop from Africa be strengthened. At the same time, advanced electronic music from Germany will be known in East Africa and will become a new point of reference for the music scene there.

ist ein Projekt von jungen Bands und Musikern aus Nairobi und Berlin, die gemeinsam die Grenzen zwischen elektronischer Musik, HipHop und afrikanischen Musiktraditionen ausloten.

Organisiert und kuratiert wird das Projekt vom Goethe-Institut Nairobi und dem Berliner Dj- und Musiker-Duo Gebrüder Teichmann. Weitere Teilnehmer sind Modeselektor, schon lange eine Institution in Sachen elektronischer Musik aus Berlin,sowie das ebenso in Berlin ansässige, multinationale Trio Jahcoozi um MC Sasha Perera aus London, Robot Koch aus Berlin und Oren Gerlitz aus Tel Aviv. Kenianische Teilnehmer des NRBLN Projekts sind bis dato das Hip Hop/Dancehall Kollektiv Ukoo Flani, die Mcs Abbas, Kimya und Lon´Jon, das Elektrohouse Trio Just a Band und traditionelle kenianische Instrumentalisten, wie die Sängerin und Percussionistin Lydia Mwango.

Seit Februar 2009 arbeiten die Musiker im Rahmen von NRBLN zusammen, auf bisher zwei Reisen enstanden die ersten Aufnahmen. Einige Teilnehmer traten zudem im Rahmen der "deutschen Kulturwochen" in Nairobi im November 2009 auf. Der Song "Msoto Millions", von Ukoo Flani und Jahcoozi, wird auf dem im Frühjahr auf dem Berliner Label BPitch Control erscheinenden Jahcoozi Album "Barefoot Wanderer" zu finden sein. Das Stück "Dirty Laundry", eine Zusammenarbeit der Gebrüder Teichmann und den Mcs Mr. Abbas, Kimya und Lon´ Jon, ist in dem Spielfilm "Soul Boy" von Hawa Essuman und Tom Tykwer zu hören, der ebenfalls in Nairobi als Koproduktionsprojekt von One Fine Day Films, Arri München, Ginger Ink und Goethe-Institut Nairobi entstanden ist. Seine Internationale Premiere feiert "Soul Boy" beim diesjährigen Göteborg International Film Festival und in Deutschland ist er erstmals auf der diesjährigen Berlinale zu sehen.

Im Frühjahr 2010 reisen die Berliner Musiker erneut nach Nairobi, um dort weiter an gemeinsamen Songs zu arbeiten und gemeinsame Konzerte zu geben. Mit der Kamera begleitet und dokumentiert wird diese Reise von Arte/Tracks und der Auslandsredaktion des ZDF. Die Tracks werden im Anschluss auf einer gemeinsamen CD in Europa und Afrika veröffentlicht. Zum diesjährigen Abschluss des Projekts werden die kenianischen Musiker zu gemeinsamen Konzerten nach Berlin eingeladen. Geplant sind diese derzeit im Rahmen des Worldtronics Festival im Haus der Kulturen der Welt und im legendären WMF Club.

In einem Jahr, in dem das Interesse an Afrika steigt, möchten wir gegen das Stereotyp des von Krieg, Hunger und Elend bestimmten Afrikas ein realistisches Bild setzen: das von dynamischen und höchst kreativen urbanen Kulturen, die sich auf ihre Weise internationale Entwicklungen anverwandeln und weiterentwickeln – und sie nun wieder zurück in die internationale Szene geben. Über die Namen aus Berlin und eine Veröffentlichung auf einem bekannten Label wird die Aufmerksamkeit auf elektronische Musik und HipHop aus Afrika verstärkt. Zugleich wird avancierte elektronische Musik aus Deutschland in Ostafrika bekannt und zu einem neuen Bezugspunkt für die dortige Musikszene.

BLNRB PICS from November 2009

Last November, Berlin-based musicians Gebrueder Teichmann and Jahcoozi were invited to play in Nairobi together with Kenyan artists Ukoo Flani, Lil John and Abbas. After spending couple of days at a studio in NRB with a number of Kenyan artists, it became clear that making music together would be the basis for the BLNRB- NRBLN project that Gebruder Teichmann and the Goethe Institut in Nairobi brought to life...

MADHOUSE NAIROBI

the rest of the world is at the Miami Winter Music Conference (yawn, yawn) and we are here in Nairobi!! And Nairobi is where it's at right now!!
Its a madhouse, the beats never stop, the MCs never go home, I'm the only woman here...... and i sleep across the corridor from one of the 3 studios that we've built up in this house.
The decor is amazing here..... 70s Swahili Chic at its best with Indian restaurant style interrogation lighting !
Í wish we could post photos but the internet is too slow......
Gebrueder Teichmann, Modeselektor and Jahcoozi all making musc in the same house.... and that all night long....... its sick!
an experiment to say the least.
Ukoo Flani, Mr Abbas, Kimya , Long Jon were here... Nazizi, Just A Band and more peeps are coming next week.

200 Shillings including a drink...... that is about 2 euro.... which is nothing, even in Kenya. (In fact food in Kenya is more expensive than in Berlin...)
So this aint clubbing for elite expats in Nairobi....this is for the people.... all across the board.... so spread the word!!

On the way...

Jahcoozis already on their way and the Teichmann´s are following soon!
Equipment is packed and the Alarm Clock rings at 4h in the morning.
Can´t wait to enter the plane tomorrow morning.
We are quite excited to make music with all those great Kenian and Berlin Artists.
